As the groom, you can wear whatever you want! That's the good news. However, some styles definitely look more formal than others do. As for the jacket, your options vary from tails, double breasted, single-breasted with a variety of button stance, etc. A tailcoat is the most formal look in a tuxedo. So if you want ultra-formal, black tails with a white shirt, vest and tie is the only way to go.

If you want a formal look, but are not interested in tails, a black tuxedo jacket is certainly appropriate. Choose the style that looks best on your body! Some guys look better in double-breasted; others look terrific in a high 4-button style. The best way to figure it out is to try them on! The details on your shirt and vest are where the tuxedo will look more or less formal. If you are trying to achieve a formal look with a regular length jacket, wear a traditional wing tip collar shirt with a white vest and bowtie, or black vest and bow tie. Do not wear the wedding color in your shirt or vest and tie. It will dress down your tuxedo.
